NEW
IMPROVED Eco Yoga Mats:
"Tread Lightly on the Earth"
The
Eco yoga mat is now more dense and longer wearing
than previously. Good news for all of us eco mat fans.
Eco
yoga mats perform exceptionally well, and are the
most earth friendly, sustainable yoga mats available.
That's why, even though they are not "made
in the USA", we carry them. They offer
adequate padding, traction and stability, and are made only of natural
rubber and jute, both renewable resources.
Plus they are "fairly
traded".
The
eco yoga mat uses open cell rubber foam which absorbs
sweat. No more puddles to slip and slide on during strenuous
astanga, vinyasa or power yoga practices.
Most other yoga mats are made with closed
cell foams containing PVC (polyvinyl
chloride: commonly known as "vinyl", a toxic
by-product of the oil industry),
then
plasticizers are added to make the PVC soft and sticky.
These mats are easy to clean but don't perform well when wet.
Only the Eco Yoga Mat and Jade
Harmony are open cell foam mats.

Eco yoga mats are
all natural
and may wear out faster than typical PVC mats, but you will feel
good using a product that treads lightly on the earth. Those with
latex sensitivity try Earth
Elements
available at Amazon.
(These
mats are not natural and contain synthetic materials. However, they
are the only alternative for those suffering latex allergies.)
Eco Yoga Mat
Product Features:
•
Biodegradable. There are no toxic chemicals or
synthetic materials used in the eco yoga mats.
•
Odor. This mat has a distinctive rubber odor, which will
diminish if unrolled and allowed to air out. Preferably outside.
•
Washable. It's a good idea to wipe your
eco yoga mat down with a clean cloth after a sweaty practice
and let it air out. You can wash by hand in a bathtub with cool
water and a small amount of detergent. Roll in a towel to remove
excess water, and lay out to dry. We don't recommend machine drying
because the heat will break down your mat and dryers use a lot of
energy, which isn't very sustainable.
(We've talked to several people who wash their mats in a machine
in cold water and air tumble in a dryer with several towels. We
haven't tried this, but have see mats that have been washed repeatedly.
They were quite soft to the touch. Please be aware that repeated
machine washing will wear your mat out faster.)
We recommend washing your feet with Jo-Sha
Wipes prior to practice. This will greatly reduce how
often you will need to clean your mat.
Avoid excessive sunlight, oils, and high temperatures.
